Caravanning: The Most Affordable Way to Travel in Europe

A recent study by the German Institute for Tourism Economics (dwif) reveals that caravaning offers travelers the best mix of cost savings, flexibility, and comfort.

Compared to holiday apartments and hotel stays, caravaning in Europe proves significantly cheaper – delivering savings of up to 60%.
A study by the German Institute for Tourism Economics (dwif) highlights that caravan travel is the most cost-effective holiday option in Europe. It compares travel costs for families and couples across three destinations (Italy, France, Sweden) and evaluates factors like transport, accommodation, and meals. Five scenarios, from budget to premium, were analyzed.

Findings:

  • Bibione, Italy: Caravaning saves up to €1,640 (35%) compared to holiday apartments and is 57% cheaper than a 4-star hotel stay.
  • Argelès-sur-Mer, France: Caravaning for couples is 26% cheaper than holiday apartments and 38% more affordable than flights with hotel stays.
  • Gothenburg, Sweden: Caravaning costs up to 48% less than holiday apartments, and even premium caravaning options are 60% cheaper than hotel stays.

The study emphasizes that caravaning not only offers cost advantages but also provides flexibility and self-catering options. Among caravaning options, traveling with a caravan and car is the most economical, with cost differences of 32–50% compared to other alternatives.
