Road Safety
Motor caravans are one of the safest means of transportation on the road. Compared to other motor vehicles, the risks and consequences of accidents are significantly lower.
The accident figures for car-caravan combinations and motor caravans have been evaluated annually by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) since 1997. As in previous years, these figures are at a level that is almost impossible to record. This provides impressive proof that leisure vehicles and their drivers are among the safest participants in road traffic.
Of 394,232 accidents with personal injury involving motor vehicles in 2022, 1,045 involved motor caravans and 251 involved car-caravan combinations.
A look at the consequences of accidents illustrates the clearly increased road safety of leisure vehicles, even compared to passenger cars. Of the 1,928 drivers and passengers killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2022, six were motor caravan occupants. Three people died in car-caravan combinations. In relation to 100,000 vehicles in the fleet, this means that the consequences of accidents are fatal for 2.4 people in cars, 0.8 people in motor caravans and 0.4 people in car-caravan combinations.

Motor caravans can be classified as extremely safe, both in terms of the absolute number of accidents and in terms of mileage-related accident risks. 256 accidents with personal injury per billion vehicle kilometers for motor caravans compared to 519 personal injuries per billion vehicle kilometers for passenger cars.
